Why is buying a pre-owned truck now a smart move?

April 18 will be here before you know it.

Let’s talk about everyone’s favorite topic: taxes. In particular, Section 179 of the IRS Tax Code and the accompanying rules on equipment (and other business expenses) depreciation schedules.

Bored yet? Don’t be. This can save you a lot of money if you purchase, finance or lease a new or pre-owned truck and put it into service by Dec. 31, 2022.

In a nutshell, Section 179 allows companies to deduct the full purchase price of qualified business expenses in the same year the purchase was made. It was included in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed into law in 2017, and its full benefits expire this year. That leaves about six weeks to take advantage of a very attractive financial incentive to replace commercial vehicles or expand a fleet before year’s end.

Here’s a sample scenario: Buy a truck this year and put it into service, write-off the purchase cost on your company’s 2022 tax return (up to a total of $1,080,000), and watch your taxable income for the year go significantly down.

Used Trucks vs. New Trucks

While this is great financial motivation, it may be even more attractive if you’re looking to purchase one or more pre-owned trucks. Supply-chain shortages (especially microchips) have made buying a new truck difficult, if not impossible. While this same situation is playing out in the automobile market, the supply-demand challenges have driven used cars to near historic highs, as much as 38 percent more year over year, according to CNN. Meanwhile, demand for quality pre-owned trucks is also high, but the price impact on the pre-owned market is far less severe. In fact, according to J.D. Power, used truck prices have been consistently going down throughout the year, as much as 15 percent per unit.

And, if you know where to look, there are great deals on a wide selection of used trucks. The uncertainty of the new truck supply and fleets extending their trade-in cycles have resulted in many dealerships, auction houses and wholesalers to shy away from adding to their pre-owned inventory. Chances are if you browsed used-truck inventory at a particular retailer a few months ago, many of those vehicles are still on the lot and priced the same.

JX Truck Centers have taken a different approach. We continue to add pre-owned inventory to meet demand and customer needs. The selection of used trucks throughout our 28-dealer network is exceptional and always rotating. Visit one of our dealer lots, or browse our online inventory, and you’ll find a great mix of makes and models.

Added Value (Beyond Tax Incentives)

Best of all, JX’s pre-owned trucks are competitively priced as we continually adjust to current market values.

In addition to selection and price, there are a multitude of reasons that make our overall value proposition unbeatable:

  • We have two truck financing divisions – JX Financial and Alltrux Capital – to serve the wide range of customer needs and circumstances. Our financing experts can also walk you through the Section 179 benefits of buying a truck today and not putting it off until next year. They can show you how, more likely than not, buying a truck before Dec. 31 is a good financial move.
  • All of our pre-owned trucks go through a comprehensive inspection before they are JX Certified. It goes far beyond just a general D.O.T. inspection and a thumbs up. Every inch of the vehicle, inside and out, is evaluated to ensure truck integrity and customer satisfaction. If repairs or replacement parts are needed, we take care of that before it goes on the lot. Common wear items, such as HVAC filters, are automatically replaced. We perform a regen and make sure the DPF is functioning properly. The engine and aftertreament system leaves the lot with at least a one-year warranty.
  • You’ll also be buying from a company with a 52-year history and a great reputation for serving the full range of customer needs with the highest levels of satisfaction. Sales, financing, service, parts, and leasing and rental can all be handled within our network – a single source for all of your truck and fleet management requirements.

Contact your local JX Truck Center today to find a great pre-owned truck that comes with best-in-class peace of mind. It also likely comes with tax incentives too good to pass up. So while JX’s dedication to quality products, aftermarket support and customer satisfaction aren’t going anywhere, the full benefits of Section 179 are. Let us help you make the most of it before it expires. And let us show you a customer experience that will earn your business for years to come.

One Representative, All the Solutions

How JX Enterprises Is Evolving Truck Sales Beyond Selling Trucks

Whether you’re a fleet owner with thousands of units or an owner-operator, you know there’s more to trucking than buying a vehicle and putting it to work. Maintenance, replacement parts, rental and leasing to accommodate capacity, and repairs are just a few of the routine business responsibilities.

Sometimes those responsibilities turn into challenges or obstacles to keeping operations running smoothly. Enter the JX Business Development Program: the Swiss Army knife of truck dealer personnel. JX Enterprises’ BDP provides customers with a single point of contact to help troubleshoot issues, create solutions, and represent the full range of resources available throughout the network of JX Truck Centers.

Comprehensive, Total Dealership Training

BDP candidates are carefully recruited, comprehensively trained, and keenly focused on further improving the complete customer experience. By building strong customer relationships, they fulfill their mission by anticipating needs and proactively providing solutions. They act as all-in-one conduits between customers and the various dealership departments, from aftermarket and financing to truck sales, lease, and rental.

The initial training period includes intensive hands-on work shadowing department leaders in parts, service, rental and leasing, and new and pre-owned truck sales, including accompanying seasoned sales executives on customer visits.

New Program, New Levels of Shared Success

It’s a rigorous process that is essential to laying out the steps to be successful and, more importantly, helping our customers see success through improved efficiencies, productivity, and profitability. This ensures they go into the field with all the necessary tools in their toolboxes to serve almost all customer needs.

Importantly, the program helps them build a network within our organization, putting the full use of our shared resources and expertise behind every customer interaction. Working side-by-side with colleagues in each department builds bonds and provides diverse experiences, helping provide customers with realistic expectations and practical solutions.

BDP graduates enter the marketplace as generalists and consultants, true business partners with the knowledge and skills to bring the broad spectrum of JX resources and organizational strength to every challenge and every opportunity.

Now, the implementation of our Business Development Program is not meant to replace the many long-term relationships already firmly in place between our customers and other JX team members. Rather, they complement and enhance the best-in-class customer service and the overall experience our customers expect from us. We’re again raising the bar, another step in our devotion to continuous improvement and unparalleled customer satisfaction.

It is an industry-wide issue and has been for decades – the shortage of well-trained, qualified truck service technicians. Few interactions between customer and dealership can sour that relationship more than a negative service experience. Extended downtime and return trips to the shop for the same problem result in customer frustration and a direct hit to the bottom line.

Just as fleets make great efforts to recruit top drivers, dealerships invest significant money and resources to help train and hire the next generation of cream-of-the-crop techs.

JX Truck Centers know how vital a positive service experience is to customer satisfaction. Exceeding expectations in the shop is always a priority and by hiring top talent we take care of our customers. In return, those customers are going to come back and they are also going to tell their peers. That not only increases our business and further strengthens our reputation, but it also bonds us with our customers.

Quality service work and fix-it-right-the-first-time principles are essential to creating an overall superior customer experience. We go to great lengths to nurture and attract future service technicians, as well as make sure the nearly 300 service technicians already hard at work in our shops receive ongoing training in the latest technologies and best practices.

Partnering With Top Tech Schools

Our recruiting team has forged strong relationships with leading technical schools throughout the nation. We regularly partner with schools such as the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH), WyoTech, Universal Technical Institute (UTI), Lincoln Tech, and over 25 other vocational institutions.

These relationships create many opportunities and activities, such as serving as guest speakers, participating in job fairs, and even helping these colleges attract new students by bolstering their recruitment efforts at the high school and junior high levels. We donate major components for hands-on instruction, such as the recent Cummins engine gifted to Lincoln Land Community College. We even bring trucks to schools to let students inspect firsthand the complexity and sophistication of the latest equipment they will be working with upon graduation.

We participate on the advisory boards of these schools, providing guidance on what students should be taught and trained for to help them excel in their careers. We help steer the curriculum to prepare for the new technologies and features coming down the pipeline.

Soft skills are just as important to future techs’ success. JX recruiters visit classrooms to help students prepare for landing a service technician position – how to build a resume, phone, and in-person interview skills and how to choose the right dealership that meets their needs and furthers their career objectives.

For most dealerships and service shops, providing competitive pay and benefits, free tool programs, sign-on bonuses, and relocation packages are the norm and not the exception. JX helps set itself apart by making an impact as early as possible. We are there preparing them for future success before they even apply for their first job.

Helping the Industry

We know not every student we help will join the service teams throughout our 28-location network, the largest in the Midwest. We want them to be successful, whether it is with a JX Truck Center or another company. Making sure students enter the workforce with the best possible training and skills helps the industry as a whole and ensures our customers receive the best care.

This dedication to providing customers with superior service experiences does not end after we hire a tech. Our culture – both in the shop and throughout all of our operations – focuses on continuous improvement. Whether our service technicians are recent graduates or veterans of the profession, extensive training is ongoing throughout their careers.

For new hires, we have an eight-month tech development plan that includes technical training and customer service skills. And for all technicians, there is an array of comprehensive training provided, both online and in the classroom, many led by our own JX training team, which ensures they are knowledgeable and certified.

Every year, something in our products changes. We require our service team to be trained on the latest truck and component updates.

It is inherent to our customer service philosophy: employing the best techs armed with the latest training, skills, tools, and best practices. It helps ensure when a customer visits a JX Truck Center, they leave with peace of mind knowing the work was done right, and they received the best possible care and consideration in the industry.

It’s almost unfair to set aside one week to honor the more than 3.5 million men and women who make the American way of life possible. According to the American Trucking Association (ATA), trucks carry nearly 75 percent of the nation’s goods by tonnage, accounting for nearly every commodity used in our lives.

This annual appreciation campaign has grown with widespread support and participation and highlights a profession that should never lose recognition. The JX team has deployed the iconic Chuck Wagons to serve breakfast or lunch to the drivers of our fleet partners while also providing complimentary refreshments and giveaways at our locations throughout Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. These are small ways of showing gratitude for the millions of men and women who work behind the wheel.

JX Enterprises, and its network of 28 JX Truck Centers, understand the many challenges and rewards truckers face throughout their careers. Our more than 1,000 team members send a sincere thank you every day, especially as a part of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week.

The JX mission is to go the extra mile during every visit to a JX Truck Center. Our passion is to ensure every contact exceeds expectations and puts a smile on the face of the incredible drivers we meet. Whether buying a new or used truck, maintenance or repair, or providing parts, we strive to ensure the appreciation the JX team recognizes is apparent every time we have the opportunity to serve our drivers.

While a shortage of drivers isn’t rare to the industry, supply chain challenges limiting production of new trucks is much less common. Truck manufacturers have been stymied to meet demand as component shortages and, especially, the global computer chip shortage suppress build rates. As a result, customers are experiencing long wait times to take delivery on new vehicles.

But challenges create opportunities, and there are many of those available in the pre-owned truck marketplace.

Quality, late-model used trucks are available for both owner-operators and fleet managers. These truck options provide an ideal solution to expand operations or replace aging units. With the current market conditions, one might assume it’s a seller’s market. Surprisingly, it’s not – it’s a great time to buy a used truck.

Throughout the JX Truck Center network, we have premium, JX-certified, low-mileage vehicles of many makes and models. Not only are they priced to move, we’re offering customers tailor-made promotional packages for a limited time, so they’re moving fast. Here’s a look at some of the options we’re offering.

  • Flexible Financing: Through both JX Financial and Alltrux Capital, paying for a pre-owned truck is easier and more affordable. Low interest rates, adjustable or matched down payments, extended terms and flexible payment options are available to custom-fit your needs.
  • Peace-of-Mind Guarantees: All of our pre-owned inventory undergoes rigorous inspection and thorough maintenance before going on our lots. Additionally, we’re offering extended warranties and can even include them in your financing plan.
  • Added Value: Another customizable option is to receive prepaid fuel cards or credit towards parts and service, including our exclusive Alltrux parts.

So if you’re tired of waiting for the supply chain to start flowing normally again and need a truck to expand or as a replacement, there are plenty of options with JX that aren’t just viable – they’re extremely favorable! And if you’re looking for an advantage to attract drivers to your fleet, having a late-model, premium-condition truck waiting for them is a great recruitment tool.

Contact your local JX Truck Center or call 1-833-459-8782 to learn more about ways we can customize your next truck purchase, and check out our inventory to find the truck that’s right for you!

Must-know Trucking Industry Statistics

Have you ever thought of working in the trucking industry? Many of you probably haven’t.

What are a few reasons you should consider securing employment in one of the most important industries in the world?

Here are a few random statistics that may surprise you about the trucking industry:

  • According to Glassdoor.com, in 2022, the U.S. national average salary for a Diesel Technician is $53,510/year.
  • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, every year from 2020 to 2030 the demand for diesel technicians in the U.S. could be as high as 28,300/year – but the industry is only predicted to grow by 13,800/yr. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.
  • The United States trucking industry is one of the largest revenue streams in the nation’s economy and is responsible for transporting 70 percent (or more) of all goods in the U.S.
  • In 2019, the industry’s total revenue reached $791.7 billion.
  • 80.4% of the nation’s freight bill came from trucking revenue in 2019.
  • There were 928,647 for-hire carriers and 799,342 private carriers on file in April of 2020.
  • The total number of trucks registered and used for business reached 36.9 million in 2018.
  • 13.4% of all registered vehicles are commercial trucks.
  • In 2019, 3.91 million Class 8 trucks (18 wheelers) were in operation.
  • 11.84 billion tons of freight was moved in 2019.
  • Trucks moved a total of $772 billion worth of freight in 2019.
  • In 2019, 67.7% of goods moved between the U.S. and Canada were transported by trucks.
  • Women make up 6.7% of the truck drivers in the U.S.
  • 41.5% of drivers are minorities.
  • 7.95 million people held trucking-related jobs in 2019.
  • In July of 2020, the average hourly wage for employees in the industry was $26.30/hr.
  • The trucking industry was short 60,800 drivers in 2018.  The truck driver shortage could reach 160,000 by 2028.
  • To combat the driver shortage, the industry will need to hire about 1.1 million new drivers for the next decade or an average of 110,000 drivers per year.
  • The largest factor contributing to the driver shortage is retiring truck drivers who will need to be replaced with new hires, which will account for 54% of new driver hires.
  • The global self-driving truck market is expected to reach $1.69 billion in 2025.

Customer-First Service Approach

Customer service is not a single element, but the combination of a multitude of smaller pieces in the right quantities merged to create the ultimate customer experience.

Fundamentally, the basis of any memorable customer experience is exceptional communication throughout the event and beyond. The ability and willingness to consistently transfer accurate information to a customer in a personalized fashion is the key to building trust and ultimately delivering an unforgettable experience. What types of scenarios have you seen and what does quality customer service look like to you?

In today’s world of constantly evolving technology, there are more avenues of communication than ever before. This should, at first glance, suggest that at this point in time we would be at the pinnacle of interpersonal communication. I would argue that the overwhelming amount of channels available to us has led to the very opposite effect. We as a culture have become further disconnected from the core methods of communication and connection that are the foundation of long-lasting relationships. This effect can be seen in personal and professional relationships alike.

The very tools that were designed to enable us to interact at a higher level have in fact reduced the number of personal interactions that we have, whether that is a phone conversation or talking in person. An email or text message can’t replace the smile that someone gives you when you walk up to them at the counter or the inflection in their voice on the phone that lets you know that they care.  These are the types of things that create an impression that won’t soon be forgotten.

Contrary to what the advances in modern communication suggest, at JX Truck Center we have identified a continued need for that personal interaction and a renewed focus on customer service. These are things that seem to have been lost or forgotten along the way in almost any customer service industry today, but continue to be paramount to an exceptional customer experience.

Building on this belief, we have developed a new training initiative to support the development of our communication and customer-first service approach. Let the service team at your local JX Truck Center showcase their customer service savvy and provide you with an experience that you’ll want to share.

10 Signs It’s Time To Look For a New Job

Sticking with one company for your entire professional career seems to be a thing of the past.

One of the main reasons is there are so many more great companies in business nowadays with a wide array of work arrangements and benefits to appeal to job seekers.  No job, or company for that matter, is perfect, so how do you know when it’s time to look for a new job?

Before you start that process, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Have I been at this job long enough to give it a fair shake?
  • Have I gotten to know my team, my boss, my customers, and my duties and responsibilities long enough to know if this is a good fit for me?
  • Have I taken advantage of all of the training opportunities afforded to me?
  • Am I giving it my all, or am I just going through the motions?
  • Am I truly satisfied with what I’m doing and the impact I’m making on the company and my community?
  • Do my values and purpose line up with the companies?
  • Is this company acting ethically in all that they do?
  • Am I truly being heard and are my ideas and input being heard and valued?
  • Am I comfortable starting over at a new company (seniority, learning new systems/databases/programs, training, benefits, etc.?)

Here are 10 signs it’s time to invest the time into looking for a new job/career:

  1. The pandemic changed your mindset on how you view your job, the company, and what you’re doing on a day-to-day basis.
  2. You have a case of the Mondays… every day.
  3. Nothing about the job or company interests you anymore.
  4. You aren’t growing and/or advancing like you feel you should and/or need to be.
  5. You are burnt out and can’t handle it anymore.
  6. You haven’t received a raise in a while.
  7. Your boss is a micromanager; or, on the flip side, you can never get a hold of them.
  8. You seem to be receiving more and more messages from recruiters asking if you’re open to new opportunities.
  9. You were on Salary.com’s website and discovered that you’re grossly underpaid for the job that you’re in (compared to others who have the same job title as you in your geographical region).
  10. You don’t feel safe at work (due to a lack of safe COVID policies, someone at work is harassing you, etc.)

If you end up filling out applications and get an interview scheduled, it’s important to ask questions in every interview. Click here to review my recent blog post of questions you can potentially ask in an interview that will impress the recruiter/hiring manager.
